In a joint collaboration between, Rhinos in Africa Foundation, Dot Klerk, Slim Lady Wines, The Good Food and Wine Show The Biggest Rhino Cake in the World project was launched in March of 2016.  

Elda from Slim Lady Wines sponsored and found further sponsorships for the cost of the metal structure of the cake and also for the ingredients of the cake which weighed a total of 270 KG.  The cake was baked by Dolce Bakery in Observatory in Cape Town.  Cab Foods supplied the  35 KG of chocolate.  The cake contained a further 130 KG of fondant,and 30KG of buttercream.  With the metal support structure the cake weighed a massive total amount of 750 KG.  The layers of cake where placed within the metal frame and sculptured into a completely life sized realistic Rhino by Dot Klerk.  Rhinos in Africa paid for the specialised transportation of the cake from Wellington to the International Convention Centre in Cape Town.


The Good Food and Wine Show sponsored the cost of the double stand at the Cape Town event.   The show ran from the 27th until the 29th of May 2016.  James Suter’s famous portrait of Balu, an orphaned Rhino from HESC adorned the stand.  
Raffle tickets were sold on line and at the show.  The winner of the Diamond Necklace donated by The Megan Carr Jewellery Co was won by Capetonian Maureen McLean.  Maureen generously donated the Diamond Necklace worth R30 000.00 back to Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre where they are continuing to raise funding.
This project was initiated to raise awareness for the declining numbers of Rhino left in Africa.  The cake was very realistic and life sized and was the main attraction at the Cape Town show.   The cake was featured on television, in print media and on all social media platforms.  The funds raised were donated to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre which is home to ten orphaned Rhino calves.  Elda, Dot and Megan were on hand over the three day period to meet visitors in person. 

The cake has been nominated as one of four of the best cakes made in the world by Cake Masters. In November at a glittering gala dinner the winner will be announced in Birmingham in the United Kingdom.  HESC will announce the winner of the Diamond Necklace Raffle part two on the same night.
